We don't always think about it, but web pages move too. Websites, databases and other information systems aren't static: they get built at a particular point in time, with particular expectations, on particular technology. In an ideal world a URL never changes — Cool URIs don't change, as the saying goes. In practice, something always changes: cool URIs don't change, real ones do. Deal with it. (For this post, feel free to read URI and URL as synonyms.)

Anyone who has used it will have noticed five datasets: heritage objects (erfgoedobjecten), designation objects (aanduidingsobjecten), people, themes and events. Heritage and designation objects form the core of the inventory database; the other three datasets are covered in a later post.

As with any overhaul, it takes some getting used to, and that's especially true for the search options: some stayed the same, others changed slightly or significantly. To ease that transition we're using this blog to walk through the main search capabilities. Today we start with some general principles; later posts dig into specific parts.
